zfxcollective
A collective of three friends – a photo editor, a photographer, and an architect creating glitch art from photographs and paintings. Amsterdam based.
“We focus on intermixing philosophical and sci-fi/fantasy subjects and contrasting them with visual realities of brutalist architecture. While the software used for base editing is largely the same (Chroma, Onelab, Glitchlab, Snapseed) the tools used vary wildly. It’s not an elegant process, mainly consisting of continuously adding and distorting layers upon layers. Sometimes when there’s a specific theme to work towards the tools are used in a more calculated manner to highlight/preserve specific elements. But generally when it comes to abstracts a lot of it boils down to trusting the process until it feels right. A lot of our work is based off of fantasy/sci-fi spins, utilizing either photography of our own, gravitating towards urban exploration/brutalist architecture elements, or utilizing art/paintworks by invited artists. We generally try to create depth through layers/distortion by contrasting elements or looking for empty space in one set of images and then layering different imagery. On top of it, to fill in spacing, spinning differing glitch/distorting effects to eventually find a cohesive feel.”

Glitch art from photographs and paintings. Donated to MadMAT by the artists.
Heavily abstracted through overexposing and overlaying a series of painted works, mostly consisting of random splatter, intertwined with a broken-up piece of a photo of a building nearby.
Concrete Jungle, December 2024
Glitch art from photographs. Donated to MadMAT by the artists.
The combination of three photographs, one of a courtyard, the other of a prison cell complex, and finally of a pier. After which the layers have been individually distorted to get the colour grading to taste.
