About MadMAT
MadMAT, the Madison Museum of Art and Technology, is a cutting-edge digital art museum in Madison, Wisconsin, dedicated to showcasing the intersection of art and technology. Our mission is to inspire, educate, and engage the community while pushing past the boundaries of what art can be, embracing new media and innovative artistic expressions.
Sedimentary Groove by Steve’s Makerspace
We value art that is digital, animated, interactive, co-created by viewers, and made with code and machines. We promote artists from marginalized groups, and local artists. AI art will be a small part of the experience. We will minimize our carbon footprint. We are working on a 501(c)3 application.
In the beginning, MadMAT will live online and on a few screens in public places, where we show digital art in a slide show. Each piece has a QR code so you can find out more about the work and artist. Most of the current collection is generative NFT art.
We’ll host events: parties with artists and live minting of NFT art, artists talking about how they make their art, and digital art jams / meetups.
Our capital campaign will culminate in the opening of our permanent space in Madison, Wisconsin. The permanent space will feature over a dozen high-definition screens displaying multiple pieces in a slow slide show. The space will not just be a gallery, but a digital playground. In one corner, you’ll use your own body and hands to interact with and change the display. In another spot, you’ll see a painting robot (plotter art). In another area, you can use buttons and sliders to co-create a piece of art and then email it to yourself. New media art would include experimental film and photography. You might wear 3D glasses to view a piece, or a piece might include lasers, or mechanical elements, or elements that haven’t been invented yet.

What is Generative Art?
Generative Art, sometimes called algorithmic art, is art generated by an autonomous process, and includes some randomness. For most of our generative art, this means that the artist writes code to make art with a certain theme (an art series), and then the code creates the art. In fact, it creates a near infinite amount of art. AI art is generative, but most of our art is not AI art. Our AI art will be labeled as such. Some generative projects include buttons and sliders so that the user can affect the art, such as choosing the color palette. In this way, the art becomes a collaboration between the artist/coder, the user, and the computer. Creative coding is closely related to gen art, and may include animation or generative music.
